Students have responsibilities too
Being at school goes beyond just the learning experience from books and classes, it is about learning from an early age to be responsible for oneself, respectful and mindful of others and duties that extend to the school itself. These rules at times go beyond the written disciplinary code of conduct, they are implied, expected to be adhered to as part of the entire character building exercise that the years of learning at school include.
What then are these explicit and implicit responsibilities that bind students
It must be understood that students, teachers and parents have their own responsibilities for ensuring all this is part of the learning process for each child.
The rights of each student
Be proud of whom they are
Treated with respect
Learn without disturbance and fear
Be in an environment free of teasing, harassment or abuse
Responsibilities of each student
Be in class regularly and on time
Be respectful of school property and that of other students, including your own
Actively participate in keeping the school environment orderly and conducive to learning
Judiciously work on school assignments
Ask questions when you do not understand and ask for help to resolve any difficulties you may be facing
Learn to manage your time
Tolerate. Think. Be aware of the impact your actions may have on another person
Make positive choices.
Always accept the consequences of your actions
Do your best. Always.
Participate. Have the right attitude.
School life is about learning how to be in the world later in life, but contributing your bit, having fun, helping others and doing it all with a positive attitude.
A significant part of being a student is to participate:
Classroom activities
Contribute to discussions and group activities
School activities
Community and recreational activities
Your attitude today will set the tone for who you will be as an adult:
Understanding your family values and cultural expectations
Care for yourself - maintain good physical health, eat right and sleep
Listen to what your parents and teachers say - you can learn from their experiences
Be cooperative and considerate to all those around you
Be open to challenges. They test you. They teach you.
Responsible communication
Be courteous. There is shying away from ‘Please’,’’Thank You’ and ‘Excuse Me’.
Using language and gestures that are appropriate and respectful at all times
There are no second chances for use of profanities, discriminatory and abusive language and gestures
Be controlled even in disagreements
Acts of destruction and threatening others is not acceptable
Being untruthful is unpardonable.
Other conduct responsibilities
Follow the dress code/ uniform strictly.
You are expected to walk in all areas of the school, no running.
Being loud is unacceptable
Violent behaviour is strictly prohibited and punishable
Do not engage in dangerous conduct that bring into question the safety, morals and health and welfare of others
Understanding and adherence to these rules, the students learn to follow rules and acceptable behaviour for the world outside school. It is ultimately responsible beyond individual successes, but helps foster community well-being and prepares students for future challenges as responsible capable citizens of the world.
